Eugene Onegin is an opera by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, with a libretto adapted by the composer from Alexander Pushkin’s 1825–1832 novel in verse, preserving much of Pushkin’s original poetry. A classic example of lyric opera enriched with Tchaikovsky’s dramatic music, it tells the story of a selfish hero whose rejection of a young woman’s love and reckless duel with his best friend lead to deep regret and tragedy. First performed in Moscow in 1879, the work remains a staple of the operatic repertoire. In Julia Burbach’s modern interpretation, contemporary themes are highlighted through Agnes Hasun’s innovative set design and Bettina John’s colourful, poetic costumes, bringing fresh visual and emotional resonance to this timeless story.
